Check the program and required DAW before you choose the laptop
Best for a program that requires it: MacBook Pro. If either platform is allowed, choose a 16GB-or-better MacBook Air for quiet portable work or a 32GB Intel Windows laptop for a verified Pro Tools or Ableton chain. Keep your present laptop when it passes a representative class project.

Check the best-overall MacBook Pro on Amazon
Logic Pro is a Mac decision. Current Pro Tools and Ableton support more than one platform, but the required plug-ins, interface driver, and school support policy must all match the same operating system and processor architecture.
The three useful purchase paths
Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch M5 Pro, 24GB / 1TB
Best for students whose program requires a MacBook Pro, or whose coursework will keep large sample libraries and heavier local sessions on the laptop.
Apple MacBook Air 13-inch M5, 16GB / 1TB
Choose it only when the program explicitly allows an Air and your real projects, ports, and external-storage plan fit a fanless ultraportable.
Lenovo Yoga 9i Aura Edition, 32GB / 1TB
A portable Intel Windows lane when the curriculum permits Windows and every DAW, plug-in, audio interface, and campus handoff is confirmed.

Current program rules change the answer
These examples show why a single generic spec list is unsafe. Always use the current page for your exact school and major; requirements can change after this article is published.
Information-gain rule: a published minimum tells you what the school will support, not how large your personal sessions will become. Meet the written requirement first, then add memory and storage only for a documented workflow.
Logic Pro vs Pro Tools vs Ableton
Mac only
If Logic Pro is required, Windows is not an equivalent purchase. Confirm the current macOS version, plug-ins, audio interface, and school-specific Mac model before checkout.
Mac or qualified Windows
Avid currently lists supported Apple silicon and Intel Macs, plus Windows 11 on 64-bit Intel Core systems, with 16GB RAM. That does not certify every plug-in or interface.
Mac or Windows
Ableton supports Apple silicon, Intel, and AMD Ryzen; its published recommendation calls for 16GB or more and 500GB–2TB of fast SSD storage. Windows-on-Arm support does not guarantee your third-party driver chain.
Use the strictest requirement
If one required class is Mac-only, the otherwise flexible DAW does not make Windows safe. If every class is cross-platform, choose the platform your interface and plug-ins support best.
What matters after compatibility passes
- Memory: treat 16GB as the practical floor for a new purchase; 24GB or 32GB gives more room for larger sample libraries, plug-ins, and concurrent apps. Do not turn that into a promised track count.
- Storage: 1TB is the balanced student choice when projects and libraries live locally. Avid asks for a separate audio record/playback drive; verify how your program wants sessions stored and backed up.
- Ports: count the audio interface, MIDI controller, iLok or other authorization device, external SSD, power, display, and card reader. A hub does not fix an unsupported driver or insufficient power path.
- GPU: music production usually does not justify a gaming GPU by itself. Buy one only for a separately documented video, 3D, or visualization requirement.
- Noise: a fanless Air can be attractive near a microphone, but it is not automatically the better workstation for sustained heavy sessions. No fan-noise or thermal claim here is based on firsthand testing.
Best for Mac-required programs: MacBook Pro M5 Pro

The exact 14-inch M5 Pro configuration here has 24GB memory and 1TB storage. It clears the current 16GB Pro Tools memory requirement and fits the school lane that explicitly asks for a MacBook Pro. It is also the least ambiguous choice when the course stack includes Logic Pro plus Pro Tools.
Skip it when: the school permits an Air, your representative projects are light, campus labs carry the heavy work, and the extra headroom does not change your workflow.
Best quiet portable Mac when approved: MacBook Air M5
The exact 13-inch M5 route has 16GB memory and 1TB storage. It makes sense for a program that explicitly permits the Air, moderate class projects, frequent campus carry, and access to lab workstations when a project outgrows the laptop.
Do not infer approval from the DAW alone. Ableton or Logic running on an Air does not override a department rule that specifically requires a MacBook Pro. Verify the number of usable ports after power and the audio interface are connected.
Best portable Windows lane: Lenovo Yoga 9i Aura 32GB

This exact Intel Windows configuration pairs 32GB memory with 1TB storage without forcing a gaming-laptop form factor. It is the useful value lane only after the program permits Windows and the current driver pages cover the audio interface, plug-ins, and authorization tools.
Watch the Avid boundary: current Pro Tools Windows requirements list 64-bit Intel Core. Do not substitute an ARM laptop—or assume every AMD configuration is qualified—without checking Avid plus each required component.
No-buy path: test the laptop you already own

- Install the required DAW version and the exact plug-ins your first courses name.
- Connect the required audio interface and authorization hardware; confirm the current driver and operating-system support.
- Open or build a representative class project with the expected sample rate, virtual instruments, plug-ins, and recording inputs.
- Record, edit, save, close, reopen, and export. Check stable playback at a usable buffer—not just whether the app launches.
- Replace the laptop only when the written program rule or this real workflow exposes a specific constraint.
Build the rest of the production chain deliberately
The laptop is one part of the setup. Compare audio interfaces for recording and streaming, plan storage with the external SSD guide, and use the Creator Production Tools hub to connect capture, storage, editing, and delivery. Frequently asked questions
Is 16GB RAM enough for music production students?
It meets current Pro Tools memory requirements and Ableton’s published recommendation, but it does not guarantee every session. Buy 24GB or 32GB when your curriculum, sample libraries, plug-ins, or representative projects justify the extra room.
Do music production students need a MacBook Pro?
Some do. Berklee Music Production & Engineering requires a supported MacBook Pro, while other programs permit different Macs or Windows. The current school requirement controls the answer.
Can a MacBook Air run Logic Pro or Ableton Live?
Current Apple-silicon MacBook Air models can meet the published platform requirements, but program approval, project size, storage, ports, plug-ins, and sustained workload still decide whether an Air is appropriate.
Can I use Windows for Pro Tools?
Yes, when the program permits Windows and the computer meets current Avid requirements. Verify the exact Windows version, Intel processor qualification, audio-interface driver, plug-ins, and any course-specific support policy.
Do I need a dedicated GPU for audio engineering?
Not for ordinary DAW work by default. A dedicated GPU is justified only when a separate course or workflow requires local video, 3D, or other graphics-heavy work.
Should I buy a laptop before orientation?
Only if the program’s current written requirement is unambiguous. Otherwise wait for the department or instructor to confirm the operating system, DAW, plug-ins, interface, storage, and campus-lab access.
