A $500 ChatGPT plan is quite a way to make your $200 bill look modest. But before you panic-upgrade, here is the useful part: your Pro 200 price is not automatically rising.
OpenAI says eligible existing subscribers keep their previous included usage through October 29, 2026, then move to a lower allowance at the same $200 monthly price. Pro 500 buys the highest Pro allowance and access to Astra Ultrafast in Work and Codex. I would check your own usage and the email about your account before paying another $300 a month.
Your usage fits
If you rarely hit a limit or wait on Astra, a $500 subscription needs a better reason.
Your account first
Look at Settings → Usage and the notice OpenAI sends affected subscribers.
Speed is costing you
Pro 500 is worth considering if usage limits or waiting for responses regularly interrupt paid work.
What happens to your $200 subscription after October 29?
OpenAI’s Pro FAQ says that if your Pro 200 subscription was active at its eligibility cutoff or during the seven days before it, you can keep your previous included usage through October 29, 2026 while you remain subscribed. After that, your plan moves to the lower included usage allowance. The monthly price stays $200. A brief lapse around the cutoff can qualify under the FAQ’s resubscription rule, but do not assume a cancellation preserves your allowance; check your actual account and the notice OpenAI says it will email affected users.
New Pro 200 subscriptions are available again, but new subscribers who do not qualify for grandfathering get the lower allowance now. OpenAI does not put a universal exact before-and-after task count in that FAQ. A job’s usage also changes with the model, reasoning effort, inputs and output size. The practical question is whether your work starts hitting a limit after the transition—not whether someone on social media has declared the plan ruined.

What does Pro 500 add?
OpenAI now lists three monthly Pro tiers, priced in US dollars. Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100; Pro 500 has the highest included Pro usage. Only Pro 500 among personal Pro plans gives you Astra Ultrafast—a lower-latency mode for GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Work handles longer jobs such as research and documents; Codex handles coding. Ultrafast aims to reduce the wait for Astra responses. The upgrade buys speed and capacity, not exclusive access to Astra. OpenAI’s access guide says regular Astra in Work/Codex remains available on lower eligible plans, subject to their allowance and settings.
Pro 100
$100/month. Base Pro allowance. No Ultrafast.
Pro 200
$200/month. More included usage than Pro 100. No Ultrafast. Eligible older allowance ends October 29.
Pro 500
$500/month. Highest Pro allowance and Astra Ultrafast in Work/Codex.
Business is a different workspace plan, not an alternate personal Pro 500 label. OpenAI says Ultrafast is also available in eligible Enterprise and Edu workspaces through workspace credits and permissions; Plus and Business do not get it at launch. If you manage a team, compare the workspace’s controls and billing as a separate decision instead of buying individual $500 accounts by reflex.
Can you just buy credits instead?
For Ultrafast on Pro 100 or Pro 200, no. OpenAI says purchasing credits on those plans does not unlock that speed tier at launch. On Pro 500, Ultrafast uses included Work/Codex allowance first and then eligible credits. Credits can extend eligible Work, Codex and Office-feature usage on supported accounts; they do not add usage to every ChatGPT model or feature. Check the option and rates shown under Settings → Usage before assuming a top-up solves the particular limit you hit.
That distinction matters because the two questions are different: “I need more of the work I already do” and “I need the new lower-latency Astra mode.” A credit purchase may help the first on eligible features. It does not turn your $200 subscription into Pro 500.

My verdict: keep, upgrade or wait?
Keep Pro 200 if the work you actually do fits inside your current limits and the normal Astra response speed is fine. Do not pay $300 more for a feature you have no regular reason to select. If October 29 changes that calculation, you can revisit it with your own meter and notice.
Consider Pro 500 if you repeatedly exhaust Work/Codex usage or genuinely lose billable time waiting for Astra responses. Treat that as your own workflow calculation: how often does the delay happen, what does it cost, and does a lower-latency tier solve the bottleneck? OpenAI’s access promise is not a TPTK speed test or a guaranteed return on $300.
Wait and measure if you do not yet know whether the new allowance will affect you. Open Settings → My Plan to confirm the subscription, check Settings → Usage for limits and resets, and read any affected-subscriber email. After the October 29 change, compare an ordinary workweek with the allowance you actually see. A dramatic launch headline is not a budget line item.

Quick questions
Will my Pro 200 bill become $500 on October 29?
No. OpenAI says the affected Pro 200 allowance becomes lower after October 29, but its monthly price stays $200. Pro 500 is a separate $500 plan you would choose.
How much lower is the new Pro 200 allowance?
OpenAI’s Pro-tier FAQ does not give one exact universal task count or percentage cut. It says affected subscribers will receive an email with details. Review that message and your account’s Usage screen; do not treat somebody else’s task count as your entitlement.
Does Pro 200 still get GPT-6 Astra?
Yes, where your account and workspace are eligible. OpenAI says Pro 200 can use regular Astra in Work/Codex from its included allowance; Astra Ultrafast is a separate speed tier limited to Pro 500 among personal Pro plans at launch.
Sources, method and updates
I compared OpenAI’s current plan, access and release documentation on September 30, 2026. The keep/upgrade/wait advice is my reading of those rules for a working subscriber, not a firsthand subscription or Ultrafast performance test. The exact new allowance for an individual account is not public in the cited FAQ. Corrections: hello@theprotoolkit.com.
