Firefox Smart Window is an optional browser mode with an AI assistant built into it. It is designed to use open pages, tabs, and permitted browsing context to help you find something you saw earlier, summarize a public webpage, or compare information across tabs.
Mistral Small 4 is simply one of the AI engines Firefox can use. You do not need to learn Mistral first. The practical questions are whether you have access, what context you are comfortable sharing, and whether you want the feature on.
Confirmed September 17, 2026: Smart Window is a gradual desktop beta; access does not appear for everyone at once. Read Mozilla’s announcement.
Three useful ways Smart Window could help
These are illustrative prompts, not TPTK firsthand test results.
- Find the page you were reading yesterday. You could ask Firefox to use relevant history context.
Illustrative prompt: “Find the article about heat pumps I read yesterday afternoon.”
Limit: Check that Firefox found the right page before relying on it. - Summarize a long public webpage. This may help you get the main points before reading the sections that matter.
Illustrative prompt: “Summarize this page in five bullets and point me to the section about cancellation.”
Limit: Summaries can miss exceptions. Verify consequential details on the page itself. - Compare several shopping tabs. You could ask for differences among products already open in the browser.
Illustrative prompt: “Compare the warranty, return window, and included accessories in these three tabs.”
Limit: Confirm current details with the seller before buying.

Who can use Firefox Smart Window?
Mozilla describes Smart Window as an optional desktop beta with a gradual rollout. Its support material places the beta in the United States and Canada beginning with Firefox 150, and in France beginning with Firefox 155. A Mozilla account is required. Eligible users may still have to wait for access.
Firefox offers several hosted AI models, and users can switch models. Mozilla currently lists Mistral Small 4 as hosted by Mistral AI. Treat the name as an engine choice inside Smart Window, not a separate product you need to install or learn.
What leaves your computer?
The simplest privacy rule is this: Smart Window keeps some information locally, but its bundled AI answers are not fully local. Mozilla says chats and Memories are stored on the device. An on-device classifier also decides whether a Smart Bar request should become a search or an AI chat.
For an AI answer, Firefox can combine your question with relevant context such as page titles, URLs, open tabs, page content, Memories, or history. It sends that prompt through Mozilla to the selected model provider. For the bundled Mistral option, that provider is Mistral AI.
A custom model endpoint follows the endpoint operator’s own terms. “Bring your own model” could mean a local endpoint or another cloud service, so check before assuming it is private or offline.
How to try it, skip it, or turn it off
- Try it with public, low-risk material. Check which model is selected, then compare its answer with the source pages.
- Skip it for sensitive work. Do not paste client, employee, financial, medical, legal, account, or confidential business information unless your organization has approved the tool and data path. Private Windows are excluded from Smart Window Memories, but that does not make an ordinary AI request local.
- Review or delete Memories. Mozilla says they are stored locally and can be reviewed, deleted, disabled for a chat, or turned off. This matters on a shared profile.
- Turn off Smart Window if you do not want it. Open Firefox Settings, choose AI Controls, and set Smart Window to Blocked. For a broader default, enable Block AI enhancements to block current and future Firefox AI features and their prompts. This setting does not control separate AI services used by browser extensions.
What the Mistral announcement changed
Smart Window itself is not new this week. Mozilla’s original Smart Window announcement page dates to August 18, 2026, and has since been updated. The September 16 announcement adds Mistral Small 4 as a model choice for users in the United States and Canada and expands Smart Window to France with official French-language support. Mistral says the United Kingdom and Germany are expected later in 2026; that is a plan, not current availability.
What Smart Window still cannot promise
TPTK has not independently tested Smart Window or compared its models, so this article does not make a speed, quality, or accuracy ranking. Smart Window is also a beta: access, model choices, quotas, and data practices can change.
Like other AI assistants, it can hallucinate, misunderstand vague requests, or be influenced by malicious instructions hidden in a webpage. Mozilla documents safeguards but does not claim those risks are gone. For consequential decisions, use the assistant to locate information, then verify the original source.
Frequently asked questions
Is Firefox Smart Window the same thing as Mistral Small 4?
No. Smart Window is Firefox’s optional AI browsing mode. Mistral Small 4 is one of the AI engines Firefox can use to answer a request. You can use Smart Window without understanding or choosing Mistral specifically.
Does Mistral Small 4 run locally in Firefox?
Not in Mozilla’s bundled Smart Window setup. Mozilla lists Mistral AI as the host. Firefox handles some classification and storage locally, but it sends AI prompts and relevant context through Mozilla to the selected model provider.
Can Firefox Smart Window use my browsing history?
It can use relevant browsing context when a request calls for it. Mozilla says that context may include page titles, URLs, open tabs, page content, Memories, or relevant history. Private Window activity is excluded from Smart Window Memories.
How do I turn off Firefox Smart Window?
Open Firefox Settings, choose AI Controls, and set Smart Window to Blocked. To block current and future Firefox AI enhancements and related prompts by default, enable Block AI enhancements. You can also keep using classic Firefox windows without opening Smart Window.
