Keep, fix or replace?
The right laptop for dental school exams is a school-approved computer that completes your institution’s current practice exam. Keep it if it passes. An installation error or failed upload calls for diagnosis first; it does not automatically mean you need a new machine.
Before checkout, separate three questions: does the school permit the device, does its exam software support the exact setup, and does the practice submission finish successfully?

Already approved and working
Keep your laptop
Use the same supported setup for the mock exam and assessment. Put the budget toward a specific problem only when one is confirmed.

If school IT confirms you need a conventional Windows Pro laptop, the Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 5 125U, 16GB/512GB is one configuration to compare.

Compare the seller, condition, warranty and return window before ordering. A 15.6-inch laptop takes more bag space than an ultraportable.
Three checks before an exam laptop is ready
1. Start with your incoming-class instructions
Find the dental school’s current IT or accepted-student page, not a general university shopping list. Record the permitted device format, operating-system edition, exam application and support contact. If the school issues a computer, ask what personal equipment you actually need before buying a second one.
For example, BU’s predoctoral policy strongly favors PCs and requires Windows Professional or Enterprise; its clinical software rules are narrower than a generic exam-software compatibility list. For the broader school-by-school buying comparison, use our dental-student laptop guide.
Augusta DCG’s current technology page excludes Surface Pro devices. An older school PDF permits them. Treat that conflict as a reason to ask the school for its current written instruction, not as permission to select whichever document suits the laptop you want.
2. Match the software actually deployed by your school
If your program uses Examplify, check the requirements below. For another assessment system, use that vendor’s requirements and the school’s setup instructions.
ExamSoft’s current requirements list supported Windows and macOS versions; institutional deployment can be narrower. ARM support requires Windows 11 24H2 or later and Examplify 3.10 or later. Virtual machines are unsupported, and touch input is unsupported on Windows and Mac. iPad support is institution-dependent.
Check the version you have installed, not only the laptop’s brand. Ask IT before a major operating-system upgrade near an assessment. A shiny update notification is not an exam invitation.
3. Complete the institution’s practice exam
Use the official school installation and practice-exam instructions. Confirm sign-in, exam download, normal keyboard and pointer input, any required camera or microphone checks, and the final submission confirmation. Keep a private note of the date, installed version and outcome; it gives support something concrete to work with.
A successful practice run is useful evidence for that setup. It does not certify future updates, a different assessment configuration, or unrelated clinical applications.

If the practice exam fails, identify the failure before shopping
It will not install or open
Record the error message and exact OS/application versions. Check school instructions for permissions, supported editions and institution-managed settings. Ask IT whether the problem is configuration or unsupported hardware.
Buying consequence: an account or permission problem may need no purchase.
The camera, microphone or input fails
Test the required component using the school’s prescribed checks. Distinguish a blocked permission from a broken device. Ask whether a permitted accessory or repair resolves it before replacing the whole laptop.
Buying consequence: replace only the confirmed failing component when the school allows it.
The exam finishes but submission fails
Follow the institution’s support procedure and preserve the error and exam files. Do not reinstall, delete files or switch machines merely to experiment while a submission is unresolved.
Buying consequence: a network or submission problem is not proof that the computer is too slow.
When replacing the laptop makes sense
Replacement becomes reasonable when the institution rejects its operating system or device format, required software cannot run on a supported configuration, or a hardware failure cannot be repaired in time. Ask about an approved loaner or school purchase program before paying for an urgent replacement.
For a new conventional Windows machine, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD storage are practical purchasing targets, not universal exam minimums. Confirm the required Windows edition. The Latitude configuration above provides Windows 11 Pro and a larger document-friendly display; choose the Pro edition when your school requires it.
Do not pay for a gaming GPU just to answer exam questions. If your curriculum separately requires demanding design software, that is a different buying decision.

Before exam day: preserve the setup that worked
- Follow the school’s update and exam-download deadlines.
- Bring the approved charger and any required, already-tested adapter or privacy screen.
- Confirm you know the approved support route and submission procedure.
- Keep clinical or patient information out of troubleshooting screenshots and personal storage unless the institution has authorized that handling.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a new laptop just for dental school exams?
Usually not if your existing computer meets the school’s written rules and completes its current practice exam. Ask IT to diagnose installation, account or upload problems before replacing otherwise suitable hardware.
Can I use a Surface Pro for dental school exams?
Only if your dental school approves that exact device and software setup. Augusta DCG’s current technology page excludes Surface Pro devices from its instructional technology path, even though an older school PDF says otherwise. Ask the school to resolve conflicting instructions.
Does Examplify support Windows on ARM?
ExamSoft currently supports ARM with Windows 11 24H2 or later and Examplify 3.10 or later. Your institution may deploy a different version or impose narrower device rules, so vendor support alone is not school approval.
What should I do if a practice exam will not upload?
Save the error text and contact the school’s exam-support team through its stated procedure. Keep the device and exam files intact unless support tells you otherwise. Do not assume a new laptop will fix an account, network or submission issue.
